Opera in Flux
On October 3 and 10 2020, Edward Venn will be participating in Opera in Flux: Identity, Staging and Narrative, a virtual conference organised by Yayoi Uno Everett and sponsored by University of Illinois at Chicago Creative Activity Award. The event will bring together fifteen scholars of contemporary opera, facilitating discussion of contemporary opera from a multitude of perspectives, including musicology, theatre studies, gender and sexuality studies, philosophy, composition, music theory, ethnography, and performance studies.
Edward Venn's own contribution, 'Narratives of the Self in Thomas Hyde’s That Man Stephen Ward' will draw on methodological approaches to operatic narrative, portrayal of gender, and emergent meaning in performance that have been developed as part of the Operas of Thomas Adès project.
